Cedar Point revealed the Blue Streak in May of 1964, built by the very well known Philadelphia Toboggan Company. At the time Blue Streak was introduced, it was the first major coaster addition to the park in over twenty years; it now remains the Point's oldest operating coaster. Blue Streak is considered a classic wooden coaster, using an “out and back” layout. Many coasters have been debuted at Cedar Point after Blue Streak, eventually claiming the park as being the Roller Coaster Capital of the World. Blue Streak has remained a well loved coaster for about 40 years now for many reasons. Many people love the Blue Streak because of its “airtime”, or negative G-forces, happening as the trains crest the smaller bunny hills. Coaster Enthusiasts live for airtime; it provides an adrenaline rush that cannot be duplicated anywhere else. Others love it because of its wonderful history, having been built by the famous Philadelphia Toboggan Company, which is responsible for many of the world’s best wooden coasters, including the Comet at the Great Escape, the Phoenix found at Knoebels, and Six Flags over Georgia’s Great American Scream Machine. Some flock to Blue Streak because they want to be able to claim that they have been on the Point’s oldest operating coaster. Blue Streak also has a wonderful location, located literally on the shores of beautiful Lake Erie. For whatever combination of reasons why people love this
coaster, all Blue Streak fans can agree on one thing: it’s a lot of fun.Blue Streak is highly recommended for those looking to get into coaster riding, or even those who aren’t ready to tackle some more intense rides, like the Raptor or Millennium Force. Thrill seeking riders begin by entering the Blue Streak station and boarding one of two classic 24-passenger trains, seated two abrest. Ride operators quickly check the restraints, give a “thumbs up”, and the train moves out of the station. The ride makes a full turn, giving riders a chance to wave at the thrill-seeking guests in the queue line, then the train ascends its 78 foot lift hill with a “capped” roof on the top. At the top of the lift, guests look to their right and see the beautiful, peaceful Lake Erie; they look to the left and see the intense Raptor, painted in green and soaring through the sky. Passengers don’t have much time to look, because before the guests know it, they’re heading down a thrilling 72 foot drop, speeding on that white track streaked with blue paint. Smiling guests then conquer three brilliantly designed bunny hills providing maximum airtime, and then a U-turn. Passengers take a few seconds to catch their breath on the turn, take a look at the lake, or watch Raptor’s inversions before conquering three more bunny hills, continuing to provide airtime, then, finally, the train hits the brakes and returns to the station. Guests leave the trains and exit with their hearts beating faster; smiling guests return to the midway, many of them preparing to hop in line and experience the Blue Streakagain. It is very hard to find a long-time fan of Cedar Point who hasn’t been on the Blue Streak, the Point’s classic wooden coaster. Although it may not break any records, Blue Streak is still a well loved coaster, found in even some coaster enthusiasts’ top ten wooden coaster lists. |
