Cobra
Specific Type: Tivoli - Large
|
For almost fifteen years Six Flags Discovery Kingdom operated without coasters for younger riders who were ready for a thrill, but not yet tall or brave enough for the extreme offerings the park had. In 1999 there was a chainwide push to install rides and coasters for the youngest guests at the park. Just one year later Six Flags Discovery Kingdom added a second family coaster that was kid friendly, but offered just a bit more. This new for 2000 coaster was called Cobra, a Zierer Tivoli - Large model, themed to a venomous snake. This fearsome theme is accompanied by a train that looks like a snake. The long 20 car, 40 passenger train has the head of the cobra as the lead car coiled up and ready to strike. Although the theme might play to a real fear of the young and old alike the 42” height requirement, with an adult, means this coaster is accessible to younger riders and families.
The ride experience starts as the snake charmers select their seats and pull down on the restraints. Once the train is locked and checked it is dispatched around a left hand turn and then up the 26.3 foot tall lift with booster wheels. The train banks and dives down at 22 MPH weaving under a section of track and down to the ground. As the train negotiates this double figure eight layout it is constantly weaving over and under itself on banked turns. When the train reaches the station after covering the 1,181.1 foot long circuit it glides through the station for a second lap. This family coaster is a great tweener coaster between a kiddy coaster and a high thrill ride that can be enjoyed by the whole family. |
