Desert Race
Specific Type: Accelerator Coaster
|
As the Coaster Wars in the United States were coming to an end, Germany was getting some pretty intense coasters of their own. In 2007, at Heide Park in Lower Saxony, a new coaster type was put into the country for the first time. The name of the ride is Desert Race and features elements that Germany had never seen before. The coaster was designed by Ing.-Büro Stengel GmbH and was built by Intamin AG. The coaster became the first hydraulic launched coaster in the country of Germany and is almost identical to the Rita coaster at Alton Towers in England. The ride is launched at a top speed of 62 mph in 2.4 seconds. Along with the speed and thrill of the coaster, the ride is full of great theming and props as well. The ride is themed after a desert complete with sand, helicopters, and jeeps. The completed coaster coast around 15 million Euros. Desert Race has 2 trains that have 5 cars a piece. Below please enjoy a written POV of the coaster! Fasten your seat belts and prepare to ride Desert Race.
As riders weave through the queue lines, the idea of being in an open desert surrounded by war machines is evident. You are immersed in a gun battle as you look for an escape. You reach the station and you find that get-away vehicle. You step into a red or blue train, pull the Intamin Launched restraint over your body and prepare for blastoff. The hydraulics launches you out at a speed of 62 mph and you begin your fast journey on 2,132 feet of track. At the end of the launch, the track banks hard to the right as you careen around the turn. The train then flattens for a half second and careens to the left on a bank all the way back around. The train hugs the sand as you go up and over a bunny hill straight into another banked right turn. The coaster goes all the war around, under the last banked turn and heads straight for the station and storage building. The track continues as your speed stays consistent. The train passes the helicopter, the station, and storage house as it heads towards the finish. The train makes one final banked right hand turn and comes into the magnetic brakes. The ride lasts only 49 seconds, but it may be one of the best 49 seconds that you every experience. |
