Most Innovative Rides of 2003
Most Innovative Rides of 2003 / By: Devin Olson, Saturday, June 21, 2003 -
2003 Has proven another year packed full of new thrillrides opening around the globe, with seventy new rides opening in the coaster category alone this spring and summer. We've once again seen records shattered with a new world's tallest and fastest, new degrees of steepness for the drops of steel and wooden coasters, some very unique ride designs and settings, and the world's two leading parks both upping the record for most coasters in a park to sixteen.

Now, we will once again take a look at the most unique, innovative, and record-breaking rides to check out that have opened up at theme and amusement parks from one side of the planet to the other in our countdown of the Most Innovative Rides of 2003. Without further delay, the list:

#10 - Superman: Tower of Power, Six Flags over Texas, Arlington, TX -

Six Flags over Texas' new superhero-themed S&S Power triple freefall complex blasts thrillseekers to new heights. The 315-foot tall structure features two Space Shot towers and one Turbo Drop, using compressed air to launch Superman wannabes into the sky or diving to the ground at 50 miles per hour. Superman: Tower of Power opened in the spring as the largest complex of its kind, and lands at our number ten spot.

#9 - Diablo Falls, Six Flags AstroWorld, Houston, TX / Penguin's Blizzard River, Six Flags America, Largo, MD -

Two more new rides in the Six Flags chain began taking visitors of Six Flags America and AstroWorld for a spin this spring when Penguin's Blizzard River and Diablo Falls debuted from Whitewater West Industries as unique 'spinning rapids' water rides. While sending rafts down a twisting 449-foot flume and 200-foot river, riders are spun around in constant rotations courtesy of specially-designed water currents. Diablo and Penguin provide dizzying and soaking ride experiences.

#8 - Drop Zone Stunt Tower, Paramount's Kings Dominion, Doswell, VA -

If you like to freefall, then Paramount's Kings Dominion's new thrillride is sure to please. The last Paramount park to add a Drop Zone tower, PKD saved the best for last. DZ's 305-foot orange and yellow Intamin-crafted tower boasts the longest freefall drop in North America, at 272 feet and three-and-a-half seconds. The tower also uses the largest ring of any Gyro Drop, with a high capacity of 56 riders per plunge.

#7 - Nemesis Inferno, Thorpe Park, Chertsey, England -

John Wardley's newest design to hit the UK park scene comes with Nemesis Inferno, a Bolliger and Mabillard inverted foot-dangler unlike the rest. The volcanic-themed four-inversion, 50-MPH steel coaster is the first inverted ride to contain an Interlocking Corkscrew element on a single track. Inferno's twisted course also features several unique pre-lift curves, a vertical loop, diving zero-g roll, and fast-paced twister finale.

#6 - Supersonic Odyssey, Cosmo's World, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia -

Our number six new ride takes us to Malaysia where Supersonic Odyssey, created by Intamin AG, promises uniqueness. The steel coaster is located inside of a shopping mall and begins at a top floor before plunging into a twisted 2,600-foot course taking place in the building. One of only several coasters in the world to find home in a shopping complex, the Cosmo's World ride will swoop through a compact course containing two inversions - a vertical loop as well as zero-g roll, all before a final lift carries the train back to the top point of the ride.

#5 - Balder, Liseberg Park, Gotenborg, Sweden -

Sweden's Liseberg Park boasts the new Intamin AG twisting wooden Balder for 2003. Balder's 3,511 feet of wooden track is packed into a compact layout of turnarounds and headchoppers, but perhaps the main interest of the coaster is its first drop - a 70-degree plunge from a 118-foot tall peak that claims the title of steepest wooden coaster drop in the world, sending riders down at 56 MPH and through the course's twelve hills.

#4 - Half-Pipe, Sarkanniemi Park, Tampere, Finland -

Vekoma's Hammerhead Stall never got off the ground, but Sarkanniemi Park and Intamin AG have come up with their own version that promises to dizzly and disorient. The U-shaped, 100-foot tall shuttle coaster Half-Pipe takes riders on a two-car train to the top before plunging them down 90 degrees while the cars rotate around, then back up a second 90-degree, 10-story spike and backwards, pulling speeds of 44 MPH.

#3 - Wild Boar, Bon-Bon Land, Holme Olstrup, Denmark -

The Wild Boar (or Vild Svinet) of Denmark's Bon-Bon Land takes the angle of thrills to a new level in being the first steel coaster ever to surpass the vertical angle with a non-inverting drop. After climbing a completely vertical lift hill, passengers are plummeted down a 95-degree drop of 65 feet, then race through the Werner Stengel-designed course featuring a highly-banked second curve, vertical loop, and helix.

#2 - Thunder Dolphin, LaQua Korakuen Park, Tokyo, Japan -

Located right in the middle of the most populated city on earth, Thunder Dolphin gets the number two ranking for locale as well as ride features. This Intamin megacoaster starts out with the steepest cable lift in the world before plunging at 80 degrees and over 80 MPH to climb a shopping mall twice, perform steeply-banked dives and overbanks, the only trick-track element on a ride of its kind, and thread right through the center of a ferris wheel, with high-speed airtime hops mid-course.

#1 - Top Thrill Dragster, Cedar Point, Sandusky, OH -

Finally, onto the number one new ride of 2003 on the countdown. Cedar Point has indeed done it yet again, and a lot sooner than anyone expected. Top Thrill Dragster takes the throne as the world's tallest, fastest coaster ever to debut, with a mammoth 42-story tower containing a vertical ascent and twisting 400-foot descent. Intamin AG designed Dragster with a hydraulic launch like last year's most innovative ride pick, Xcelerator, to rocket riders from a standstill to 120 MPH in four seconds - the fourth-fastest thrillride acceleration in the world. TTD takes steel coasters to a new extreme.

With all of this year's new innovations, ideas, and records, one is inclined to ask, could it possibly get any better than this? We'll see....
