Frontier CityLocation: Oklahoma City, OK

Did you ever wonder what it was like to live life on the frontier? If you travel to Oklahoma City, you can take in the sights and sounds of Frontier City. Frontier City was built in 1958 as a Western themed “town” amusement park at the Oklahoma State fairground, but soon had to move to a new location because of money issues. The park was originally owned and operated by Premier Parks and is currently owned by CNL Lifestyle Properties. In the 1960s, the park began to add multiple roller coasters and spinning rides which caused an increase in park population and even the area around Oklahoma City to grow economically. This was short lived as the park changed ownership and less money was being put into the park.
When Premier Parks purchased Six Flags Inc. in 1998, it was believed that Frontier City would become a Six Flags park, but this never happened and eventually headquarters moved from Oklahoma to New York and parks like Frontier City and Darien Lake were sold to the highest bidder. Frontier City stands as an independent park today run by Premier and has five roller coasters to offer. The featured coaster is the Wildcat classic wooden coaster that is a must ride for any thrill seeker. In 1979, a Schwarzkopf steel coaster called the Silver Bullet was opened as still operates in the park today. In 2008, the park added a family suspended coaster called Steel Lasso which is great for all ages. Frontier City is a true theme park as things are themed around the West. Guests will enjoy shops, food, and shows that are all geared toward the Wild West. The park also has a family dark ride and water rides to get everyone wet on those hot Midwestern days. Make sure when you are in sooner country, you head on over to Frontier City and get your spurs on. |
