About 200 miles from Roswell, New Mexico you will find a Galaxi you can visit. At Cliff’s Amusement park in Albuquerque they have been operating an S.D.C. Galaxi since 1976. Even if you have not visited this area in the southwest you may still be familiar with the Galaxi. S.D.C. installed them starting in the 1970’s at 37 parks, and sold many others as traveling coasters as well. This layout was also used by Pinfari as early as the 1960’s, who named theirs Zyklons, and were installed and relocated to another 96 parks. Back in New Mexico, Cliff’s Galaxi has a nostalgic look to the station, featuring the smooth curves you would see in architecture of the 70’s and a large light up Galaxi sign. The lift hill and the highest turnarounds have stylish lighting fixtures as well giving this Galaxi a nice retro-modern look. The trains are only two cars long and can seat four riders per car and all have bright fleck infused colors in their molded plastic as resemble bumper cars on a roller coaster track.
The ride experience starts with a climb to the top of the lift where cars enter their first turn around, and then dip into the main drop gathering speed to reach a maximum of about 31 MPH. The main features on the Galaxi are the two helices. They are slightly banked and dominate the ride experience by spinning the train 520 degrees on each side of the figure 8 layout. The track length is 1099 feet long and the ride lasts about two minutes. |
