No matter what beach you go to, you are more than likely to see some type of pier or boardwalk that is buzzing with fun and excitement. Today, many amusement parks are being build right on these structures; creating a lot of income for the cities in which own and operate them. Located in Galveston, Texas is one of these parks called the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier. The park is one of the newest in the country as it was just opened in 2012.
The small little pier park is located 1,130 feet out into the Gulf of Mexico on Pleasure Pier. The original Pleasure Pier was destroyed in 1961 by Hurricane Carla. In 1965, the pier was rebuilt and an over the water hotel was built called the flagship. Many hurricanes eventually caused the destruction of the hotel which was demolished after Hurricane Ike in 2008. In 2011, the park was redone by Landrys Incorporated and had a soft opening in 2012. The park built the key attraction in 2012 called the Iron Shark. The ride is a Gerstlauer Eurofighter roller coaster that rises above the Gulf in elegant fashion. The park also includes 14 other rides including flats and kiddie rides that are good for every member of the family. There are restaurants, food stands, and shops for you to spend your hard earned dollar in as well. So the next time that you are vacationing around the Gulf of Mexico, stop in to Galveston and try out the new pier park. |
