Six Flags Over Texas is the original Six Flags park and opened in 1961. The sixties were a time of growth in Texas thanks to the oil industry. This meant expansion for the park as well, so they introduced Boomtown, named after the towns in Texas that sprung up around oil wells. The park added the iconic oil derrick observation tower and their second roller coaster in 1966, called Runaway Mine Train. This was a great family attraction, an Arrow Mine Train that fit the area theme and offered a fun experience that was the first runaway mine train that Arrow built. It spawned the creation of 16 other mine train rides that became staples at regional parks around the country.
Unfortunately the youngest miners in Boomtown could not meet the minimum height requirement, so Six Flags Over Texas reached out to Arrow to create a junior version of the mine train coaster. Younger visitors were able to ride their first coaster on the Mini Mine Train starting in 1969. The Mini Mine Train offered a scaled down version of the Runaway Mine Train, complete with swooping banked turns and tunnels. The Mini Mine Train departs the station and meanders around around a left hand turn and climbs the 20 foot tall lift hill. The train gently descends around an “S” turn. Turning first to the left and then the right as it enters the first tunnel. The train goes down a small dip and enters another tunnel as the track banks to the left. The track then hops up and into the third and final tunnel. As the train breaks into the light and completes a turn the station is now in sight and the 910 foot long circuit is complete. The youngest miners in Texas have conquered their first “big” coaster and can now walk on their tiptoes over to The Runaway Mine Train. |
