Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit: After 6 weeks of closure, the parks signature coaster is now back in operation.
After being closed for the past few months, Universal Studios’ Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit coaster is now back in operation. The ride was closed back on September 16 for maintenance, though details about the maintenance from the park were not revealed.
Just a couple of weeks before, on September 2, the coasters manufacturer, the German-based Maurer Sohne, found a flaw in the design of its X-car ride vehicles. The manufacturer sent out a notice stating that a coupling bar connecting trains was prone to fracture, after finding out that the actual loads were greater than predicted with the original design. The park claims that this issue had been taken care of before the manufacturer announced the problem, but the maintenance period seems rather long for just “routine” or “annual” maintenance.
Opening at the park in August 2009, the $45 million coaster features a 90-degree lift hill, blaring music of the riders choice, and many unique elements--including an “outside” loop and the “treble clef.” Though the ride is open now, the park has said the ride will likely not be operating after-hours during Halloween Horror Nights. The park was likely not sure precisely when the ride would return to operation, and did not want to run the risk of including the ride in the event if it was inoperable.
