Son of Beast Lawsuit Settled
Long Line of Mishaps has the Ride’s Future in Jeopardy
March 26, 2011 - greatbearrush
Mason, Ohio -
Jonathan Yanik of Ashland, Kentucky, filed a lawsuit against Kings Island in 2006, after an accident on one of their premier rides, Son of Beast. The accident involved 27 people getting injured on the ride when a support failed and caused the track the train was traveling on to “sink or dip,” according to Cincinnati.com.
Yanik suffered shoulder damage from the accident and refiled the lawsuit in 2010 after he was required to have shoulder surgery in 2009, Cincinnati.com reports. As stated on wcpo.com, the two sides settled for an “undisclosed amount.”
This was the last of several lawsuits against Kings Island over incidents involving the Son of Beast roller coaster. Only one case was taken to court, where Jennifer Wright was awarded over 76,000 dollars in damages for a hip injury, while four others were settled out of court.
The Son of Beast has had problems since it was first built in 2000. Between 2001 and 2003, there were three reports of broken necks. In 2006, there was the incident that caused 27 people injuries. The ride was closed for over a year as King’s Island overhauled the entire ride, including the removal of the trademark 118 foot vertical loop, and opened again in 2007. Less than a month after its re-opening, a 30 year old man died from blunt-force trauma to his torso which caused him to hemorrhage.
The ride was shut down indefinitely in July of 2009 when a woman claimed the ride caused a blood vessel in her brain to burst, according to the Oxford Press. The ride did not reopen for 2010 and there are not plans to reopen it in 2011.
