Ride of Steel Closed for Remainder of Season

Ride of Steel Closure

August 21, 2011 - biZarRo

Darien Center, NY - The signature ride at Darien Lake Theme Park Resort, Ride of Steel, will be closed for the rest of the season. This is because a couple of weeks ago the chain on the lift hill broke, stranding the train's 36 passengers for 30 minutes. They then walked down the 200' lift hill. No injuries occurred, however. The ride will be closed until next season, when a new customized lift motor is installed.

On August 18th, a press release on the park's website stated:

“'While we regret to inform our guests that the roller coaster will be down for the remainder of the season, we still have a large variety of rides and attractions for guests of all ages to enjoy,' said Christopher Thorpe, general manager of the park.
The park remains open daily through September 5 and weekends through October 9.”

Ride of Steel was built in 1999, as one of the first hyper coasters by Intamin. The ride is known for its crazy airtime and features many small bunny hills at the end and two floater hills on the ride’s first half. Also featured on the ride are two very forceful helices.
