Bournemouth, England -
© Adventure WonderlandTragedy nearly struck at Adventure Wonderland last week.
On Wednesday, June 7th, as a woman and her two children were riding the Polly Drop ride, the ride malfunctioned, plunging the three riders fifteen feet to the ground.
“It was about halfway up when I saw it just come down. It just plunged straight down. People just gasped,” Avril Kirkwood, a local woman who had been next in line for the ride, told the Bournemouth Daily Echo. “There were pieces falling about next to the ride. Everyone was shocked and we left straight away. The children were crying and the poor woman just looked shocked.”
Polly Drop, the ride in question, is a 30 foot tall children’s vertical drop ride themed to a parrot. The ride was going through its second cycle when it fell from halfway up its post. Fortunately, park officials told BBC news that the backup cables had been replaced the previous month.
The victims in question were sent to the hospital, but went relatively unscathed. The mother, Regan Jones, 39, had bruises while her two children, Katherine, 10, and Timothy, 7, were treated for shock, according to the Bournemouth Daily Echo.
Russel Lucas, the managing director of Adventure Wonderland, has been vocal on the situation. He told BBC news, “All our rides are fully certified annually by a safety inspector and then checked stringently on a monthly, weekly and daily basis,” but that he was “extremely thankful” that the injuries were so minor.
He also told the Daily Echo that the Health and Safety Executive were expected to visit the park on Friday for further investigations.
The rest of Adventure Wonderland is open and operating normally.
