The new area Cars Land is the new draw as Disney California Adventure opens with high attendance figures.
Disney's California Adventure has never been known to draw attendance figures of note. In fact, on its opening weekend when the park opened in 2001, most lines for rides including the popular rides like the California Screamin' roller coaster were 10-15 minutes.
That has all changed.
The newly named Disney California Adventure Park re-opened after many park renovations including the $1 billion Cars Land on the weekend of June 15th, 16th and 17th. The park smashed any of its previous daily attendance records in that weekend alone. While park won't discuss exact figures, Miceage.com, a Disney fansite, said the California park reached an all time record on the 17th. It is estimated that people in excess of 125,000+ went through the gates, including over 43,000 on Friday and 45,000 on Sunday.
Cars Land opens as a new section of the park. The area, themed to the movie Cars and Cars 2, features about a dozen new attractions to the park, including the highly anticipated Radiator Springs Racers, a duel track racing car ride. Animatronics of all the Cars characters and other interactive entities liter the area as well, all of it decked out with Disney's attention to detail and quality.
