Glenwood Caverns opens common steel coaster at rocky heights
June 25, 2012 - The BeastFan
Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, Glenwood Springs, Colorado - Anyone who has ventured on RCDB or has a lot of coasters under their belt probably have heard of or ridden the S&MC produced Hurricane model coaster. The cloned batch have 60 ft lift hills and travel just above 35 mph in a twisted steel course. Not something many would consider a huge coaster, but many have fun on none the less. A recently opened Hurricane model in Colorado has an interesting twist.
Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park in Colorado recently acquired Thunderbolt, a Hurricane model that once called the now defunct Celebration City home. They built the coaster in time for their 2012 season, but the new coaster has one other element of note. It got the Guinness World Records' attention as it is the coaster located at the highest elevation. The Colorado coaster opens at an altitude of 7,160 ft above sea level.
The coaster, located on a mountainside within the park, required some planning before hand which the park owner Steve Beckley remarked to Amusement Today "It's tricky to build a roller coaster on top of a mountain, so the process has taken a little longer than we'd hoped. I have given it a test ride, though, and it has definitely been worth the wait".
