Though standing since the late 40's, the long wait of Comet's final demise is now over.Another historic coaster met its demise on Wednesday, July 11th. The legendary Comet at Lincoln Park last saw riders in 1987 when Lincoln Park closed, and has been sitting idol since. The lift hill collapsed in 2005, but the majority of the coaster has stood tall, despite 25 years of decay. The Herald News reports that the ride will take more than a month to dismantle according to park officials and that the owners plan on trying to keep sections so sell off with proceeds going to charities. According to WPRI, portions of the coaster will also be broken down and turned into furniture. The ride has been standing since 1946.
The ride's departure is with mixed feelings by some. One enthusiast was quoted by WPRI as saying, "It was shake, rattle, and roll. It gave you a little physical abuse and slapped you around when you went around corners," and, "This coaster for me was my very first coaster, so that's why for me there's a lot of sentimental value."
Lincoln Park itself will be transformed into a living complex with 57 single family homes and 3 apartment buildings with 120 apartments. Some commercial space is also planned for the former park's domain. Little Amerricka purchased the Comet's trains some years ago, according to rcdb.com, and intends on refurbishing them and building a copy of the coaster, but no timetable for the project was ever given.
