Joyland Goes Up In Flames
Fire Causes $15,000 in Damages
August 12, 2012 - Tyler Carlton
Wichita, Kansas - The abandoned Joyland Amusement Park in Wichita, Kansas has recently had a fire. According to KAKE fire crews were called to the scene at around 7pm on Saturday, August 4th. It is estimated that the total amount of damage caused by the fire is in the range of around $15,000.
According to The Wichita Eagle the fire was first noticed by a motorist driving along I-135. The motorist then called 9-1-1 to report that they had seen smoke coming from the area. Fire crews were able to get the flames under control quickly.
The fire started in a two story maintenance building and it is believed that the contents of the building may have ignited and caused the fire. However, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Of the $15,000 of damages it is estimated that $10,000 of this is related to the structural damage done to the maintenance building. The other $5,000 comes from damage done to the contents that were being stored in the building. KAKE is reporting that no rides were damaged in the fire.
Joyland opened in 1949 and steadily operated up until 2004 when declining attendance forced the park to shut its doors. The park had a second chance in 2006 when a group from Seattle re-opened the park with the hope of renovating it. Unfortunately these plans were unsuccessful as the park closed at the end of the 2006 season and has remained closed ever since.
