RYE, NY
The city lost an appeal in a lawsuit over Playland that pitted Rye against Westchester County government over big changes planned at the amusement park. Rye’s lawsuit was dismissed in New York State Supreme Court in 2017 and a state appellate court upheld the dismissal on Wednesday. Westchester County Executive George Latimer, a Democrat, said he was pleased with the decision but said the county would be a “good neighbor” to Rye. Latimer once served on the Rye City Council and lives near the park, which is owned by the county but located within the city. “My commitment remains strong to the City of Rye and the people who live there,” Latimer said in a statement. “We, the County and the City of Rye, have to work together to do what is best for the people we serve.” FULL STORY

Today, for the very first time, a Copperhead Strike train rolled out onto the track. The train has been at the park for weeks, and it is undergoing a rigorous and methodical testing phase that will continue for weeks. Here’s the video of its first trip out of the loading station, through a Jojo roll and into the launch barn. Next week, we hope to begin testing the first launch. The two other trains just arrived in the Port of Charleston from Germany. We expect delivery at the park within the next week or two.
Roller coasters and their trainloads of screaming passengers hog skylines and get most of the glory. Spinning carousels with their majestic prancing steeds and lively band organs project auras of charm and nostalgia. Towering Ferris wheels, bathed in colored lights, sparkle against night skies.
Bumper cars, however, are housed inside buildings away from the tumult of the midway and typically get lost in the shuffle. The ride may not have the panache of other classics, but bumper cars have been essential attractions from the earliest days of amusement parks to the present. Getting behind the wheel of one is a rite of passage. No visit to a park is complete without landing a good ka-thunk or two. One of the first bumper car rides may have been the Witching Waves at Coney Island’s Luna Park, according to Charles Denson of the Coney Island History Project. The attraction debuted at the New York amusement mecca in 1907 in a large outdoor oval along the Bowery. The cars were not powered by electricity, but relied on an undulating floor to propel the low-slung vehicles, which passengers steered using levers. FULL STORY WEST MIFFLIN, PA
