Earlier this week, Disney Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products Chairman Bob Chapek shared the first details on the innovative new ride system planned to bring the adventurous “Guardians of the Galaxy”-inspired attraction to life at Epcot. According to Bob, building an adventure this big will require a ride system and ride vehicles unlike anything our guests have experienced before. What guests will encounter can best be described as a one-of-a-kind storytelling coaster that connects the adventure of a storyline with the thrills of a coaster. “On most coasters, the vehicles point straight ahead throughout the ride,” Bob explained. “But on this attraction, each individual cab will be programmed to direct your eye to the story happening around you. Back in July, we learned of Kennywood’s plans to unveil The Steel Curtain, a Steelers-themed roller coaster and the anchor of the park’s incoming Steelers Country section. On Tuesday, we were given the first glimpse of the cars that will ride along the 4,000-foot steel tracks. Kennywood and the manufacturer of the coaster’s vehicles, S&S Worldwide, unveiled the cars at the International Association of Amusement Park and Attractions’ (IAAPA) International Expo in Orlando, Fla. The design doesn’t require much unpacking — black and gold coloring, football-shaped seats, “33” displayed on the front as a nod to the year the Steelers were founded — but there are some details that might appeal to coaster-heads. The open-style vehicles appear to seat four riders per car, and the restraints are lap-bar only (no over-the-shoulder restraint). FULL STORY SAN DIEGO, CA
SeaWorld San Diego’s new “world’s first” Tidal Twister dueling roller coaster debuting in May won’t actually have trains that race one another and may not technically qualify as a roller coaster. Tidal Twister has ignited debate among ride enthusiasts about whether the trains “coast” along the track, a key qualification of a coaster, and if either train can “win” the duel. The new SeaWorld ride features a nearly 300-foot-long single-rail figure-eight track with an airtime camelback hill that crosses over a zero-g corkscrew twist in the middle. Designed by Orlando-based Skyline Attractions, the 30-mph Skywarp Horizon ride has two trains that are attached in the middle and powered by drive wheels. The track rises a mere 16 feet above the ground and will be surrounded by faux rock work. “This is a high-speed dueling figure 8 roller coaster,” said Jeff Pike, president of Skyline Attractions. “Other people want to disagree with me, that's fine. I'm happy to discuss it with them.” FULL STORY ORLANDO, FL
