Construction on Kings Island's new, luxury, outdoor resort is underway.Kings Island Camp Cedar is a $27 million luxury campground that will welcome guests to Kings Island, vacationers and travelers alike, all year round. The resort sits on 50 acres of landless than a mile from Kings Island's front gates, and will be have 173 cottages and 164 full-service recreational vehicle spaces available for guests. Kings Dominion will open up this year after all—for a new limited-capacity, holiday-themed event in December that requires reservations.The theme park in northern Hanover County, one of Virginia’s biggest tourist attractions, will reopen on select dates between Dec. 5 and Dec. 27 for the Taste of the Season: An Outdoor Holiday Experience. The event will allow guests to buy samples of 25 different holiday sweets—such as Southern fried pecan pie, a mint ice cream sandwich, eggnog and cookies—and other foods, including chicken gumbo and battered shrimp, in festive- themed areas. The park also will have live shows and gift stores will be open. Carowinds General Manager Pat Jones has finally welcomed guests back to her amusement park. Granted, it’s for an abbreviated run — and at reduced capacity — after a roller coaster of a season. Carowinds launched a new event in November called Taste of the Season after Covid-19 kept its gates closed through much of 2020. That outdoor food festival dishes up sweets and savory items amid holiday decor, seasonal shows and even a few rides. Busch Gardens is especially noteworthy, I think, for the number of home goods found in its stores. Who goes to a theme park to buy a planter of prettily arranged succulents?
