There's always something about a park that sits on the banks of a lake. It feels as if the lake gives life to the park. The lake is not just there but it is a part of the park itself. In a small town in Connecticut, a park just like this has thrived on the happiness and laugher of families for generations.
Starting off as a trolley park in the early 20th century, Lake Quassapaug began in 1908 by a Mr.Richards. He quickly realized all it needed was a drink stand to turn this trolley park into a summer resort. It was a place for families to get away for the day, enjoy the lake breeze, grab a drink and maybe watch a band play. It was a simpler time then, but that would all change after back to back World Wars. During this time, three business men bought the land and formed Quassy in 1937. By adding a hotdog stand, some paddle boats, and even a carousel this small summer resort began to grow and to turned the frowns upside down as war raged on across the pond. It wasn't until after World War II when Quassy really took off, and in to became a full fledged amusement park. 1953 saw its first roller in the form of an Allan Herschell classic. The Little Dipper has been thrilling little kids and families for decades. With this, Quassy started to gain a reputation of a wonderful place for families to enjoy together. With a water park that's been there since the beginning, and with Quassy Beach since 2003, the park had been slowly adding new things through the years making a surprise hit of the park. As we end our journey of this park, I almost forgot to mention the biggest hit of them all. A sleeper hit that turned heads all over the world. The great people of Gravity Group bought us the Wooden Warrior in 2011. Unlike their other creations, the WoodenWarrior is actually a junior coaster. It doesn't have to have huge droops, or super fast speeds, but it promises to to bring you a super fun and exciting ride. Next time you are in Middlebury, CT make sure you stop by Quassy and thank George Frantzis II and Eric Anderson for bringing you and your family enjoyment that will last a lifetime. |
