Disaster Transport

Cedar Point

Last Update: January 25, 2013

Originally opened in 1985 as the outdoor bobsled coaster Avalanche Run, Disaster Transport has always been a family favorite. This bobsled coaster, meaning that it runs freely inside of a trough instead of being attached to track, is one of only twenty-five of its type in the world. Standing at sixty feet tall and with a top speed of forty miles per hour Disaster Transport is definitely not the tallest or fastest ride around, but it is a ride that the whole family can enjoy, and it is a stepping stone for youngsters to bridge the gap between Jr. Gemini and Millennium Force.

When the ride originally opened as Avalanche Run, it was a fully outdoor coaster. Built by Intamin AG, and having trains designed by Giovanola, Avalanche Run cost only $3,400,000 to build. However, five years later Cedar Point decided it was time to spice the ride up a little bit.

In 1990 a company named ITEC Productions was brought in to give Avalanche Run a whole new persona. The ride was fully enclosed in a building and given a new theme. Avalanche Run had become Disaster Transport. The queue and ride were given a space theme featuring several lighting and sound special effects. The cost of the renovations was $4,000,000, which was more than the cost of building the ride originally. In addition to theming, the famous 12-E was put on the outside of the building. For several years rumors spread about what the mysterious 12-E stood for until in 2005 Tony & Tyler from the Cedar Point Blog revealed that Disaster Transport was the twelfth design by an ITEC Productions employee named Eric. Unfortunately, since this time the quality and quantity of said special effects have severely diminished. Most of the queue has been transformed into Halloweekends storage and a majority of the on-ride special effects have been turned off.

Distaster Transport begins as you board the car in a station full of black lights. You then move forward onto the lift hill lined by lights on both sides. At this point, it still resembles your average roller coaster, and the elements of the bobsled ride to come shortly are not yet evident. As you crest the lift, you notice that there is no track in front of you, but instead a big metal trough that will guide you on your journey. You begin with a diving turn off to the right and from there its all turns and helices with a few brake runs thrown in there. After your bobsled adventure comes to an end, you exit the ride in a separate, but still black lit, station.
