Parc Asterix

Last Update: January 15, 2013

Parc Asterix is not a park you hear about very often, not only because of its location in France, but also because of the lack of new rides in recent years. The newest coaster at the park is Trace Du Hourra, a bobsled coaster manufactured by Mack. This ride shares many similarities with Avalanche at King’s Dominion, including its trough-like track and small stature. But Trace Du Hourra differs from Avalanche because of the theme. Avalanche is themed to snow, like most bobsled coasters, but Trace Du Hourra is themed to a story, about a caveman learning to walk and yelling “Hourra” (French for “Hurray”) while running down the mountain. This theming is what sets Parc Asterix apart from any other park that puts their emphasis on theming.

Although most of Parc Asterix’s rides are small in stature, there are two very unique rides that are considered the adult coasters of the park. The first is Goudurix, a Vekoma Custom MK-1200 that features a very unique layout. The ride starts out with a butterfly inversion, executes a batwing, and finishes the layout with a loop and double corkscrew. The second is Tonnerre de Zeus, a Custom Coasters International wooden coaster, and features a 98’ tall lift hill, two helices, and great moments of airtime between the helices.

Now the park has opened its newest coaster: OzIris, a new egyption themed B&M Inverted coaster. The ride sports the blue and tan color scheme found on Montu at Busch Gardens Tampa, but the ride experience is very different. Instead of the drawn-out, inversion filled layout of Montu, OzIris features a tighter, more intense layout that isn’t heavily focused on inversions. The ride is also smaller and slower, with a 114’ height, a speed of 56 MPH, and a total length of 3,280’. OzIris does however, feature many new features that B&M hasn’t used before in an Inverted Coaster. For starters, the ride has excluded the predrop found on all prior B&M Inverted Coasters, which allows a much steeper drop. OzIris is also the first B&M Inverted Coaster to feature a dive loop, and an under-water tunnel. The ride does not include a final flat-spin, which has always been included as a closing act on B&M Inverted Coasters.

OzIris can be found in the back right-hand corner of the park, which is also home to SOS Numerobis, a small Zierer family coaster which was renamed as part of the new Egypt section of the park. After queuing and loading the trains, the restraints are pulled down and the ride-op gives the thumbs up to start the ride.

The ride makes a slight right-hand turn out of the station before going up the lift. Once at the top, though, the ride steeply drops and twists so that the train is facing in the opposite direction of the lift. The train soars to the right and maneuvers the diveloop, which leads into a Silver Bullet-esque overbanked turn to the right. After a vertical loop and immelman, the ride turns to right around the loop, and dives down into an under-water tunnel, which is filled with mist for effect. After traversing a drawn-out flatspin to the left, the train circles around and drops under the turn back into the station and into a zero-g roll. The ride then finishes very much like Talon at Dorney Park, with a final helix to the left and hop to the right into the brake run, out of breath. After another right turn, riders unload and exit so that they may can go around for another run, or sit down to recover from the breakneck pace of OzIris.
