In 2009, Efteling announced that they would be closing the long standing Pegasus ride and demolish it. Enthusiasts in Europe immediately speculated what could be added into that area and in 2010, the park a wooden racing roller coaster called George and the Dragon. In December 2009, the concrete pillars were placed and the first wooden structures were visible. As of January 5, 2010, the first cranes installed parts of the track.. On February 3, 2010 the highest point of the roller coaster was reached and the anticipation was growing with each and every day.
The coaster was designed by Willemen Charles who had also designed the Flying Dutchman coasters. The ride was built by Great Coasters International. The theme and idea behind the coaster is the legend of Saint George and that the two coasters would compete against each other to see who could defeat the dragon. The two dueling coasters reach a maximum height of 25 meters and a maximum speed of 75 kmh. Each of the tracks is 810 meters in length and one of the delights for guests is the big dragon that moves out of the water between the two coasters. The dragon sometimes breathes fire as the train passes by. Come now as we take a virtual ride on the racing wooden coaster known as George and the Dragon. As guests enter the queue area, great theming and views of the lake are present. In the station, guests sit in the train cars, pull the lapbar down and prepare for battle against the dragon. The train leaves the station and heads up the left hill. At the top of the lift hill, makes a 180 turn to the left (or right) and then the first drops takes your breath away as you descend toward the earth. The trains enters into small M bunny hills that give you great air time. At the end of the hills, the train banks hard to the right or left as the coasters cross over and under one another. The coasters once again cross one another and you exit with a great view of the lake and castle in front of you. The train continues with sharp turns to the left and then to the right all while going over a bunny hill with great air time. The train speeds through a fast S turn and into a full 180 degree turnaround. The coasters cross one final time and speed through the wooden monstrosity and end up on the final brake run. This coaster never lets up from the time of the first hill so prepare for the fight of your life. The coaster is very smooth for a wooden racing coaster and is one of the newest racing coasters in the world. |
