The Beast
Specific Type: Wooden, Terrain
|
During the latter half of the 1970’s, Kings Island wanted a new coaster to break records and to draw crowds. This coaster would open to the public in 1979 and become a true legend from the backwoods of Ohio: The Beast. Built by Kings Island, The Beast’s layout would be designed and built as a terrain coaster by Kings Island employees like Charles Dinn. At the time of its opening, the Beast broke the records for being fastest and longest coaster in the world.
Riders first enter the queue of The Beast through an old mining company depot, littered with signs of Beast Containment next to a strange old mine shaft. Once seated, riders take off into a wide turn to the right that leads into an 110 ft lift hill. The lift slows at the top, giving riders a beautiful view of the helix finale, and the 135 ft drop into an underground tunnel. The Beast then drops into a trim brake as riders descend into the tunnel, reaching speeds of up to 61 mph. As The Beast exits the tunnel, riders are pulled around an heavily banked turn to the left. Riders then rise before falling into a valley that rises into a turn right into a straight shed portion of the attraction to reach another trim brake. After this, riders drop to the right along another ground hugging drop and levels into another more opaque tunnel left. After exiting, riders plunge into a series of drops with slight curves to the right. The Beast then takes a sharp right turn, ascending a hill before descending down another hill before ascending the second lift hill rising 141 ft. After cresting, riders begin to descend left picking up speed into the half covered helix. The Beast rises slightly as the helix opens up before re-entering the tunnel. Riders then ascend from the helix into the final brake run. The Beast originally served as a base name of two other coasters: The Son Of Beast which was demolished to make way for Banshee and The Beastie which still exists as Woodstock Express. The next time you find yourself in the backwoods of Ohio, explore the old mining company and experience the legendary power of The Beast. |
