Since 1962 Adventureland has been offering families on Long Island a place to go for thrills right in their own community. The success of Coney Island is legendary and as these bedroom communities sprang up Adventureland brought a taste of those thrills out to the suburbs for the displaced New Yorkers. Adventureland became ingrained in the local culture, but has been featured in pop culture as well. The 2009 movie Adventureland was filmed at Kennywood, but was based on the director Greg Mottola’s experience working there. Adventureland was in the movie Music & Lyrics, Sweet Liberty, a music video for Chaka Kahn, and a television episode of The Americans.
Turbulence was opened in 2015, and became Adventureland’s largest single investment to date, at a cost of $5 million. The coaster is a spinning model by Mach Rides, and sits on the same plot of land that two other roller coasters sat on. The first coaster was Galexy an S.D.C Galaxi, then Hurricane also built by S.D.C., and now finally Turbulence. It is a compact design, and a tangle of track that can barely be contained inside the space provided, to save space the maintenance area is actually under the station. The ride is the tallest and fastest on Long Island. The riders load into the spinning cars, half facing forward and half facing backwards. The cars depart the station locked so that they cannot spin. As the train ascends the 55 foot tall lift hill a PA blairs the song Turbulence by Steve Aoki. At the top of the hill the cars unlock and can freespin, the track does a U-turn to get the cars moving and the train glides down the first drop at 40 MPH. At the bottom of the drop the train shoots straight back up on a speed hill banked over to almost 90 degrees. The train then goes up a small airtime hill before getting into the truly twisted track. The trains go around a tight turnaround that really gets the cars spinning, next the train traverses a serpentine S-turn that reaches from one side to the layout to the other. On the other side the track does another tight turn though a figure eight maneuver that brings the train back to the far side of the layout. One more tight turn leads the train into the brake run. The thoughtful layout that Mach designed really makes use of the spinning cars and gives a totally unique ride every ride, you can be facing any direction at any given moment, infinite ride experiences. |
