Parc Astérix is a park with a plethora of coasters that reference to classical eras of history. From the barbarians of the north, to the sands of Egypt, Parc Astérix has created an intricate story with their attractions. This use of classical eras has grounds in the stories of Astérix the Gaul, however occasionally uses more comical versions of classic tales from Mythology around the classical world. One such tale could be found in Le Vol D’Icare, a Zierer Hornet, using the tale of Icarus’ rise and fall on man made wings.
Le Vol D’Icare is French for the flight of Icarus, with the ride’s layout in the ruins of Crete. This layout also makes use of a Sun as the myth describes that Icarus flew too close to the Sun making his wings melt, thus falling back to the Earth; making Le Vol D’Icare’s layout the rise and descent from the sky as riders plummet back to earth. Riders first meander the Greek ruins of the queue before loading into the ride vehicle. Le Vol D’Icare goes out then turns right into a 35.1 foot tall lift hill. While cresting, riders see a Sun prop as they turn right and begin the curved right drop reaching speeds up to 26.1 mph. Le Vol D’Icare then curves up left into a mid course brake run. Riders then plummet again into another curved right drop which flares out into a left hand curved ascent. Le Vol D’Icare then has another brake while going through the Greek Ruins before making a left hand curve down followed by a right hand curve down. Le Vol D’Icare then hits another brake before making another section of curves slowly going down before hitting another brake. Riders finally make another left hand turn with a small drop into the final brake run. Le Vol D’Icare is one of two Zierer coasters within the park, the other being SOS Numérobis. The next time when you visit Parc Astérix, put on new wings and experience flight on Le Vol D’Icare. |
