The LA Times has reported that Nickelodeon Universe, the massive amusement park within the walls of the Mall of America in Bloomington, MN, will be getting a new attraction this year. Dubbed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Shell Shock, or just “Shell Shock” for short, is a Gerstlauer Sky Flyer ride, and will be the first of its kind in the US when it opens on March 17.
Once on the ride, guests will be hoisted up to 70-feet in the air in single-seat winged gondolas at the end of a cantilevered arm which will rotate them around at speeds of up to 25 mph. As they spin around at the end of the arm, riders will be able to control the pitch of their wings, and thereby cause their seats to “roll.” Having the ability to control your individual seat will allow everything from a smooth spin, to a rocking motion, to all out barrel-roll spinning.
The ride is based on Gerstlauer’s Sky Roller, which made its debut at Belantis Leipzig in Germany, and will have two “sister” rides open up at France’s Nigoland and Legoland Germany. From the images provided by Nickelodeon Universe through the LA Times, guests will enter through a sewer way, the Turtles home/underground headquarters. The remainder of the ride and structure are also adorned in a sewer-theme, and the ride gondolas will be painted with turtle shells and ninja weapons for fighting off villains.
In its press release, the park is calling for fans to attend the grand opening at 8 a.m. on Saturday, March 17 to set the world record for the largest gather in of Ninja Turtles, which currently stands at 786. Those who attend will be given a free ride on Shell Shock, and a limited number of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle t-shirts and masks. Jennifer Lauerman, marketing director for Nickelodeon Universe, stated “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shell Shock continues the momentum of fun and excitement that Nickelodeon Universe offers to Mall of America guests every day.
Nickelodeon Universe will also be opening the Dutchman’s Deck Anchor, a stainless steel spiral tube slide system, which will have two tubes twisting around one another, one 56-feet tall, the other 35-feet tall. The tallest will be situated at the top of the Flying Dutchman Ghostly Gangplank Adventure Ropes Course.
