On a sunless Saturday afternoon in Elysburg, Piper, the red fox mascot of Knoebels Amusement Resort, rode through the park on a golf cart, wearing a face shield on her big, furry head.
Saturday marked one month since Knoebels reopened to visitors, with strict social distancing guidelines now customary in the era of COVID-19. The once cold-to-the-touch North Pole in front of the Christmas shop was “closed for your safety.” The Statue of Liberty in front of the food court lost its torch. And yet, the band organs still tinkle. The sound effects loop of slamming doors and howling wolves still emanates from the Haunted Mansion.
“It just feels weird,” said 10-year-old Jenesa Sancho, who visited with her best friend, Kenya Sessons.
