Specific Type: Floorless Roller Coaster
Cedar Point, in Sandusky Ohio is known as America’s Roller Coast as inside you will find some of the most unique and record breaking coasters in the world. In May of 1996, the park opened up one of those record breaking roller coasters. Mantis was the fastest, tallest and steepest stand up roller coaster ever built. Bolliger and Mabillard manufactured the beautiful red blue and gold machine that took guests for the ride of their life. As time passed, the stand up coaster phase was running out of style and the ridership was dwindling so in 2014, Cedar Point announced that they would be closing Mantis for good, but that the track would stay put and they would turn the coaster into a floorless coaster.
For over 10 years a creature was hiding in the lagoons and woods of Cedar Point Amusement Park. This was the lore in which the park decided to use for the naming of the coaster. The coaster was painted orange and converted into a floorless coaster station. The coaster was opened in the spring of 2015 as guests waited anxiously for a new ride experience. Rougarou uses the same roller coaster track that was used for Mantis and the layout is the same. The trains were switched from stand-up to floorless where there is no floor beneath the cars. There are three trains with eight cars that seat four people across. Come with us now as we take a virtual ride on the unique and floorless coaster called Rougarou.
Rougarou starts off with a 145 foot lift. Once the ride gets to the top, it turns riders around a right hand turn, and drops 137 feet into the lagoon below. Riders are then thrown into a 119 foot tall vertical loop, then are sent into a signature dive loop. After the dive loop riders are propelled into a turn over the station. After the pass by, Rougarou goes into a vertical loop that is at a side angle. Rougarou slows as it enters into an upward helix and into the mid-course brake run. After the block brakes, the ride goes into a severe corkscrew, through a unique double figure eight helix before hitting the final brake run that goes into the station. Be aware of the werewolf as you make your way out of the lagoon and enjoy the rest of your day at Cedar Point.
The next time you are in Sandusky, make sure that your roller coaster adventure includes a ride on Rougarou. You will not be disappointed.
