Efteling has always been a park that makes fantasy come to life. The attractions weave whimsical tales of great feats, and spooky horrors into fantastic experiences. Baron 1898 is no exception to this time tested truth. This Bolliger and Mabillard Dive Coaster weaves it’s own tale of a mysterious gold mine haunted by spirits who protect the land. The baron is looking for new miners, and those who would be willing to mine it for him. Will you be up for the job?
Baron 1898 has a distinct vintage industrial setting that cannot be found anywhere else. The queue and station buildings are themed to the factories made dating to the 1800’s; like the operating vintage smoke pipe, and the steampunk style lift structure this coaster has a distinct industrial style. Upon entering the queue, riders are told the story of a baron who wants to reap the gold from the mines, and his ongoing battle against the spirits who now haunt the land. When riders begin the coaster, they are first greeted with the spirits who haunt the mines. This cinematic display is shown as a sign that this job will not be easy, and that the new recruits are in peril. After the display, the lift hill starts and riders are taken to a height of 123 feet above the drop point. As riders are stopped at the top, they are instantly met with a view of a mist covered mine, haunted by the spirits. With the tone of a bell, riders are dropped 123 feet at speeds up to 55 miles per hour. Racing through the mine tunnel riders are whisked away into an Immelman followed by an Zero G Roll element. This element transitions into the final helix, and into the brake run. Baron 1898, unlike most coasters, blends thematic scenery, a well woven story, and intense thrills into one coaster that you cannot find anywhere else; this helps to make the coaster look larger than life, and for the theme to have an important part in the overall structure. The next time you are in Efteling and an old man asks you to work in his mine, take the dive into Baron 1898. |
