Adventureland is a family-owned amusement park in Altoona, Iowa which currently has four roller coasters: Outlaw, a Custom Coasters International wooden twister, Tornado, an out-and-back woodie and Underground, an enclosed wooden roller coaster also built by CCI. This article is going to talk about Dragon, the only steel roller coaster at Adventureland and the only one to offer inversions.
Dragon was built at an estimated cost of $2.1 million by O. D. Hopkins. Opened on the 12th of May 1991, the ride is located beside the Tornado roller coaster in the newly named “Dragon Island” area of the park. Its station was previously used to contain a haunted house ride. The train leaves takes a small dip out of the station and turns gently to the left. The track dips and riders are sent over a small bunny hop and round a right-hand turn before entering the lift hill. Upon reaching the top, the train dips and takes a gentle turn to the right before dropping down and travelling through the double loops at high speed. The track then turns to the right and riders are sent round a 360 degree helix before entering an upward right turn, crossing over the track and into the brake run. Dragon has become known among enthusiasts for its notoriously rough ride but regardless, it offers a thrilling ride and is worth a try. |
