Spain’s PortAventura has created an impressive ride selection over the years with strong coasters mixed with family attractions. PortAventura’s legacy started in 1995 as they opened for the public with only two coasters, one to stand above the other. This coaster would create a precedent in thrills with theming in tandem of each other. This Bolliger & Mabillard steel coaster would become a staple of the China section and become an anchor of thrills for the years to become, Dragon Khan.
Dragon Khan’s lift hill now goes under the lift hill for Shambhala, however it was originally open before Shambhala’s addition in 2012. After winding through the Oriental queue, riders then are seated to prepare for launch. Dragon Khan begins with a curved drop right that levels out into the 148 foot tall lift hill. After cresting, Dragon Khan takes a small dip and a turn right into the 161 foot drop reaching speeds up to 65 mph. Darting under Shambhala, Dragon Khan then ascends into a Loop. Following this, Dragon Khan veers left into the Dive Loop that leads simultaneously into the Zero-G-Roll. Before riders could catch a breath, Dragon Khan performs a Cobra Roll over the final brake run. Riders will then ascend left into the mid course brake run, quickly dropping into a right hand drop that races into another loop. Dragon Khan turns left then dives into the first set of Corkscrews, then turns around to do another set to create the signature Interlocking Corkscrews element. Dragon Khan finally makes the final curve left into the final brake run. Dragon Khan has become a staple of PortAventura’s coaster lineup as it was painted from the original white supports red track scheme to a new blue supports and red track scheme. PortAventura has a plethora of lands and coasters to explore, but make sure to trek out to China and experience the wrath of Dragon Khan. |
