As one of the most visited vacation resort towns on the Atlantic coast, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina hails as an entertainment capital. The city is full of roaring beaches, entertainment venues, a new boardwalk, and of course a family amusement park. Why would you not build an amusement park at one of the most popular beaches in the country? Family Kingdom amusement park has been a staple in people’s vacation plans since 1966. Today the park boasts over 35 rides and attractions and is one of the only few remaining free admission parks in the country. The park is located right on Ocean Boulevard and is in a prime resort location with lots of traffic. The park is locally owned and operated and offers ride tickets and wrist bands for all day enjoyment.
The park opened in 1966 as Grand Strand Amusement Park and was a seaside destination for over 25 years. In 1992, the name was changed to Family Kingdom after it was purchased by the Ammons family. The Ammons family has played a crucial role in the development of Myrtle Beach and is continuing to do so by making it one of the premier family beach destinations in the country. The park also purchased the Wild Rapids water park in 1997 and added it to the amusement park. The park began to expand the water park and renamed it the Family Kingdom Water Park. In 2013, the park was renamed once again and is currently Splashes Oceanfront Water Park. The water park has 18 rides and attractions and is a separate fee from the amusement park. Family Kingdom sits on 13 acres of land on the famous Withers Swash. The land was part of a 66,000 acre King's grant to Robert Francis Withers in the early 1700s. Withers was an Indigo plantation farmer. Today one of the park’s main attractions is the Swamp Fox roller coaster that was built in 1966 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company and is a stellar ride. The park also added a wild mouse coaster in 2013 to bring their coaster count up to 2. The park is also known for their Ferris Wheel which was the tallest in South Carolina until the one on the boardwalk was built. If you are planning your next beach vacation to Myrtle Beach, make sure that you include a day at the Family Kingdom Amusement Park. There is plenty to do for every member of the family. Enjoy yourself in the great Palmetto State and ride on! |
