Kings Island has always been a park that immersed guests into different lands and eras of history. From the classics of Coney Mall, to Rivertown, Kings Island has blended these areas of the park with world class thrills. However, in the late 90’s, Kings Island saw the need for a new concept that was an immersive experience for all ages. This would need to be an immersive coaster that stood above the rest and would become a unique experience to the park. To fulfill this need, Kings Island would call upon Premier Rides to create a first of its kind LIM, Linear Induction Motors, Launched Sci-Fi themed coaster: Flight of Fear.
Originally Flight of Fear opened with an The Outer Limits overlay during the Paramount ownership of Kings Island; however this branding was taken away after the Cedar Fair acquisition of the park. Riders first enter through the X-Base area of the park into Flight of Fear’s building dubbed Hangar 18. As riders meander the queue, they witness a pre ride show in front of a large U.F.O. with Sci-Fi props around. This preshow would give riders back story about the attraction and ride experience as they enter into the U.F.O. . After entering the U.F.O. station, riders are met with other “guests” in tubes around the control booth. Once riders are seated, Flight of Fear launches riders into darkness reaching speeds up to 54 mph. After racing down the launch, riders are whisked into the “Spaghetti Bowl” starting with a Cobra Roll which drops riders into a Sidewinder. Riders then meander a few turns before meeting a mid course brake run. Riders then descend left diving further and further in various curves. As Flight of Fear curves down and right into another series of turns, riders pick up speed reaching the ground before leaping into a Corkscrew that leads back into the brake run. The LIM Launch was a new technology when Flight of Fear opened, being one of two firsts in 1996 the other being located in Kings Dominion. As well, this coaster duo served as an indoor model of Premier Rides to create several other clones that were outside rather than the indoor layout seen on Flight of Fear. The next time you find yourself in the mysteries of X-Base, sneak into Hangar 18 and experience Flight of Fear. |
