Surf’s Up! When you are ready for fun in the sun in Southern California your first thought is probably of the beach. Knott’s Berry Farm is borrowing from the local beach culture for their 2018 addition, Hang Time, a Gerstlauer Infinity coaster. This coaster will bring a new twist on the popular coaster model by adding a holding brake to the drop to add a dive element, the first of its kind on the west coast. Even though you shouldn’t surf at night, at Knott’s you should. Hang Time is equipped with an interactive lighting package that will make being around the ride on the boardwalk section of the park more exciting. The coaster will feature chaser lights that will illuminate as the coaster navigates its way around the track. This multi colored display is more for the guests looking at Hang Time than for the riders, and will surely be an awesome display for those who are waiting in the queue.
When riders do make their way into the station and get locked into a train they are dispatched directly onto the main lift hill. The train makes a vertical ascent to the top of the 150 foot tall hill. Once at the top the train is gentally edged out onto a piece of track angled 60 degrees down and then stops, giving riders a moment where they cannot see the track in front of them and they do not know when they will be released. The brake releases the train and it dives down the beyond vertical drop of 96 degrees at 57 MPH. The train carves into the first element that pairs the motion of a non-inverting loop directly into an immelman. The train swoops down low and then ascends into a cutback, sending riders upside down as the track curves back around and then flipping the train back around as it dives low once more. The train rips around an overbanked turn and then bounds over a small airtime hill. The train races into its final inversion a cobra roll, that dissorents rides as it weaves through this dense tangle of track. The train is then returned to the station after the nearly 2,200 foot long journey is done. Guests are now able to come up for air and decide, should I stay on the boardwalk or is it Hang Time? |
