One cannot describe the pure mystique and down-home hospitality of the Smoky Mountains unless you have visited Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. To add to that classic charm, Dolly kicked the park up another notch with the addition of Lightning Rod; a custom built Rocky Mountain Construction wooden roller coaster that is quite literally built on the side of a mountain. Herschend has worked with RMC on another custom build at Silver Dollar City with Outlaw Run.
Lightning Rod is themed to classic hot rods of the mid 1900s and features a custom launch system that is the first of its kind on any wooden coaster in the world. The launch propels riders up the lift hill at 45 miles per hour in less than 2 seconds. At the top, riders experience a short dip and then a drop of 165 feet into the canyon below. The coaster reaches a top speed of 73 mph which makes it the fastest wooden roller coaster in the world. The beautiful mountain filled terrain allows the coaster to make marvelous over banked turns, a “wave turn” and the featured quadruple down drop that brings massive amounts of air time. This 22 million dollar roller coaster is one of the main pieces of the large expansion of Dollywood that started in 2013. Make sure you schedule a stop at Dollywood so that you can experience the southern hospitality, cinnamon bread, and Lightning Rod. |
