In 2011 just a year after Luna Park opened they launched their Scream Zone, an area wedged between Deno’s Wonder Wheel and Stillwell Avenue. This area although part of Luna Park was marketed as an additional destination filled with mostly thrill rides. This new area brought an unusual coaster called Soarin’ Eagle. Soarin’ Eagle is a Volare model flying coaster. It is actually the original Volare, it was first installed in Elitch Gardens in Colorado, and known simply as the Flying Coaster. It operated from 2002-2007 and then sat still built but not operating from 2008-2010. It was then disassembled and installed at Luna Park for 2011 in their Scream Zone.
The riders are greeted at the station by very unusual ride vehicles. They have seven cars but the cars are dispatched individually. Four riders can ride in each car in a single row. When you are ready to take flight you step into the car and lie on your belly with your head sticking out in a cage. The ride operator closes the car around your back and you are tipped into the flying position as the car departs the station. The lift hill is arranged in a spiral and a rotating lever in the center pushes the car up to 50 feet the highest point in the ride. The car goes down a slight dip to gain some speed and inertia and banks around the far side of the track layout. As you come around the corner riders are faced with their first heartline roll, and then a banked turn in the opposite direction. The track straightens out and takes another dip regaining some speed and banks hard around to the right and then spiraling into another heartline roll to the left. The car enters another banked turn blind, the track rises and falls. The track winds serpentine though the structure agilly banking around supports. It takes one last hard banked turn into the brake run. The ride returns to the station and tips into a position where guests can disembarque the odd ride vehicle after the 1,282.8 foot long circuit. |
