One of the most unique places in the world for coaster enthusiasts is also the most absurd. Who had the bright idea of adding a full amusement park inside of a mall? Well, they were a genius especially when you get a glimpse of Nickelodeon Universe which is located inside the Mall of America in Minnesota. As the weather is frightful for most of the year, guests can enjoy coaster thrills year-round. One of the many attractions that guests can enjoy is Spongebob Squarepants Rock Bottom Plunge. This coaster was built in 2008 as the shortest Euro-Fighter style coaster in the world. This is a record that still stands today. There are many unique elements throughout the ride that include a 97 degree drop. The coaster was designed by the Gerstlauer and installed in the park by Ride Entertainment Group.
The coaster is themed after the very popular Nickelodeon cartoon and is specific to one of the shows on the first season called Rock Bottom Plunge. The coaster cars have two rows that seat four guests abreast. The trains are beautifully detailed in orange paint with flames on the sides. The cars stand out as they traverse the aqua-marine colored track. Guests enter the station and step into one of the Euro-Fighter cars. You sit down and pull the OTSR down over you. The train pulls out of the station and makes a quick left hand turn towards the lift. The car stops as the chain hooks on. The chain then lifts the car straight up at a 90 degree angle to a height of 67 feet. The car crests the hill and guests stare down to their doom as the car drops into a 97 degree drop. As the coaster lands at the bottom, it goes straight into a loop. As the car exits the loop, a high banked left turn brings the car around. One of the signature elements is next as the car races through a heartline roll that gets riders out of their seats. The car turns out of the roll to the left and slows at a mid-course brake run. The car then darts to the right and into a high banked cutback element. The ride finishes with a speedy up and out helix before hitting the final brake run. You have just experienced 1,345 feet of pure excitement at speeds of 40 mph. |
