Steel Dragon
Specific Type: Spinning Coaster
|
Most people are used to the standard Wild Mouse type coasters that are planted in many parks throughout the country, but at Waldameer in Erie, Pennsylvania, there is a different breed of this coaster that just may make your head spin! While visiting the fun little family park, make sure that you ride Steel Dragon. She is a beauty painted in wonderful color against a magnificent sky background.
Steel Dragon was designed and manufactured by Maurer Söhne and was placed in the park in 2004. This ride is unique in that there are spinning cars on the track instead of a standard train or car. The cars spin as it spans the track giving a unique ride to each guest. As one of the newest coasters in the park, guests flock to the ride and give rave reviews. Many believe that a spinning wild mouse coaster is far superior to the standard mouse coasters of the past. There is only one way for you to find out. Jump in the queue line and take a ride! As riders enter the small station, they board the bright orange cars that have decorative paintings on the outside. The car is set up where 4 people can board the same car and sit back to back. You pull the lap bar over your thighs and the ride begins. You leave the station and head toward the standard chain which takes you quickly to a height of 50 feet. At the top, you start to feel the car spin as you head down a small drop to the right and straight into an over banked turn to the left. As you are coming out of the turn, the car spins quickly around a sharp S turn and then into an extreme over banked turn. If motion sickness hasn’t gotten you yet, you then head into the brake run and down a small ravine. Here the car picks up speed and goes through a normal wild mouse course of quick and sharp turns all while spinning like a top. To finish the ride, the car goes up a small hill, dips very fast in a ravine and then onto the final brakes. The car slowly returns to the station and when you get off, you either get back in line or find the nearest trash can. While at the park, make sure that you and your family try out this rare coaster and see for yourself why many say it’s the best ride in the park. |
