Super Flight

Playland Park is a classic amusement park on the Long Island Sound in Rye, NY. The park has been offering thrills just outside the hustle of New York City since 1928, and in 2004 they installed Super Flight. This flying coaster is a Volare model manufactured by Zamperla, and is one of only two that operate in the US. This rare flyer twists and turns riders around a layout with a mix of positive and negative G’s.
The riders are greeted at the station by very unusual ride vehicles. Four riders can ride in each car in a single row, and each car is dispatched individually. When you are ready to take flight you step into the car and lie on your belly with your head sticking out in a cage. The ride operator closes the car around your back and you are tipped into the flying position as the car departs the station. The lift hill is arranged in a spiral and a rotating lever in the center pushes the car up to 50 feet, the highest point in the ride. The car goes down a slight dip to gain some speed and inertia and banks around the far side of the track layout. As you come around the corner riders are faced with their first heartline roll, and then a banked turn in the opposite direction. The track straightens out and takes another dip regaining some speed and banks hard around to the right and then spiraling into another heartline roll to the left. The car enters another banked turn blind, the track rises and falls. The track winds serpentine though the structure agilly banking around supports. It takes one last hard banked turn into the brake run. The ride returns to the station and tips into a position where guests can disembarque the odd ride vehicle after the 1,282.8 foot long circuit. |
