Can you imagine riding a bicycle upside down through a loop and living to tell the tale? Typically you would see this type of thing in the circus, but now you the everyday citizen can know the feeling when you take a ride on Tempesto! at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Virginia. Tempesto is a Sky Rocket II model roller coaster built by Premiere Rides in 2015. The park opened the roller coaster to a soft crowd in the spring and the early buzz about the coaster was nothing but spectacular. The idea for this coaster centered around a fictional bicycle stuntman who accidentally left his latest stunt in the theme park.
The name Tempesto follows the story of famous Italian stuntman E. Mephisto who was better known as Diavolo. He, along with American J.C. Carter were some of the first men to attempt to go upside down in a “Loop the Loop” on a bicycle. Many tried and only these two men were able to succeed such a fearless feat in the early part of the 1900s. Today, many consider these men the fathers of incredible stunts that led to things like the X-Games. Guests and roller coaster enthusiasts were excited and anxious when they first heard of a new coaster going inside the park. The park kept very quiet about the ride and it wasn’t until early in 2015 we learned of the name. Tempesto was built and manufactured by Premiere Rides and the coaster contains 1 train with three cars. Each ride can hold 18 passengers. The coaster boasts some really extreme elements which include a non-inverting loop and a 154 foot tall in-line twist. The coaster is LSM launched and the teal colored track really makes a pop in the area. The train is fire themed along with the ride logo. Tempesto became the fifth roller coaster inside of the park and can be found in Festa Italia. So, now if you consider yourself a daredevil, continue reading as we take you on a virtual ride on Tempesto. As guests enter the station, they get to see the coaster up close and personal as it speeds back and forth through the station. Finally, your turn has arrived. You enter the train, pull down the restraint and prepare for launch. The coaster launches forward and up the first vertical side, the coaster then screams backward through the station and then up the second vertical track. The coaster then picks up speed and reaches speeds of up to 62 mph. The coaster then propels up the vertical track, corkscrews and then prepares for the signature in-line twist 154 feet above the ground. The coaster completes the element and then then leaps over the edge while careening to then head over top of the station with a drop maneuver. The coaster then barrel rolls up and over like a cork screw and then speeds back through the station and up the first vertical track. The brakes catch the trains as it descends back into the station. The ride has come to an end and you have now been rewarded your daredevil status. |
