Specific Type: Wing Coaster

The first thing that comes to mind when you say Holiday World would be what? If you answered wooden coasters, you would be correct. If you answered great water park, you would be correct. If you said free pepsi and sunscreen then you would be correct again. If you answered B&M steel coasters, you would most definitely be incorrect. This, however, is no longer the truth either. In 2014, after a long 66 days of teasers and clues, Holiday Word announced the addition of its first ever steel coaster called Thunderbird. Many enthusiasts have been waiting on the small seasonal park to bring its first ever steel coaster to Santa Claus and they did so in a big way.
Thunderbird was not only a first for the park, but also a first for the manufacturer. The coaster is truly a unique machine. Bollinger and Mabillard are the brains and hand behind their first ever launched wing coaster in the world. The gimmick coaster that many thought may phase out continued on with this new version which propels riders from 0-60 mph in less than 4 seconds. The layout of the coaster has many unique elements including the largest wing coaster loop and a double flyby barn that gives riders the head chopping effect that the coasters are known for. In keeping with tradition, the coaster uses the terrain of the park and its famous Voyage wooden coaster to its advantage. The coaster spans a distance of over 3,000 feet and has a top height of 140 feet. The coaster features two trains that hold a total of 20 riders. The track features a bright orange color scheme while the bird shaped trains have an aqua blue color to contrast. What are you waiting for? Join us as we try and rescue the Mayflower with a ride on Thunderbird! As guests enter the standard queue area, you will choose which side you want to ride on and go to the corresponding side of the queues. As you enter the barn themed station, the bright colored bird train arrives and you strap yourself into the now famous, B&M OTSR. The train departs from the station and enters a second building where it comes to a stop. Effects and smoke fill the room as if a storm was all around you. Then all of the sudden the train is propelled from 0-60 mph straight out and up into a 140 foot Immelman loop. As you exit the Immelman, the train soars into the tallest winged coaster loop in the world; crosses over Voyage and into an overbanked turn around called a horseshoe. As the train exits this element, you are now weightless as you go into a zero-g roll. The train now heads through an S curve and into the signature flythrough element of a barn. As it exits the barn in turns around and then turns on its side for a head chopper effect through the barn again. The coaster finishes the barrel roll and comes into the final brake run. You have now saved the Mayflower and Thanksgiving will never be forgotten. |
