Parc Astérix, located in France, has become a name pseudomonas with French coasters and thrills. Themed to the comics of Astérix, it spans the ancient lands of Antiquity to today with a comical twist. In creating their park however, they lacked a classic wooden coaster that had thrills, yet impeccable theming to lead up to the major attraction. Through the creative teams at Parc Astérix and Custom Coasters International, Parc Astérix acquired a new thrill for the 1997 season: Tonnerre de Zeus.
Located in the Ancient Greece section of the park, Tonnerre de Zeus is a wooden coaster themed around Zeus, the Greek god of thunder. As riders first enter the queue for Tonnerre de Zeus, riders are greeted by a statue of the greek god as they walk towards the greek temple themed station. Tonnerre de Zeus starts with a curved drop right into the 98 foot tall lift hill. After cresting, riders take a small drop and a right hand turn into the first drop. Riders will then descend into a tunnel reaching speeds up to 52 mph. Racing out of the tunnel, riders ascend into the next hill which leads into a U turn drop which ascends back into another drop. Riders then crest another hill, taking a left hand turn drop, which races back up into another right hand turn. Continuing right, riders then descend into a helix bowl that leads into several airtime hills. Tonnerre de Zeus continues on with another u turn drop that leads back up into a few more air time hills. Riders then perform another turn into a series of turns with drops in-between to race back to the queue. Riders will then ascend into another hill over the queue which leads into a final turn into the brake run. Tonnerre de Zeus, however, is the only wooden coaster to date that operates within the park. So when in France, don’t forget about Parc Astérix, and take on the might of the Tonnerre de Zeus. |
