Tornado
Specific Type: Suspended Looping Coaster
|
This Intamin multilooper in itself is a rarity until very recently, of course, and compared to many other coaster types it is still an uncommon breed. The Intamin suspended looper is even more rare. In fact, there are only three such specimens in the world,Volcano: The Blast Coaster, and two unique suspended gravity powered loopers both named Tornado one being at Särkänniemi Amusement Park in Tampere, Finland and at Parque de Atractiones. Tornado at Parque De Atractiones was the second built and the first Suspended Looper ever built with a conventional lift. It is also still the only Intamin suspended coaster with a wingover or, as Intamin calls it, a screw. The ride is completely green. However, it is several different shades of green, the track is a Riddler green and the supports are a bit dark. The ride is built in what is apparently a clearing where it is completely surrounded by trees, even with a few inside the layout itself.
The coaster itself was quietly constructed by Intamin AG in early 1999. It opened to the public for the first time on May 5 1999.Tornado opened to mild reviews. It was cited as being smooth and exciting, but not forceful nor fast enough. The coaster is triple looper that sits in low woods on the edge of Parque de Atractiones. The lift is offset about 75 degrees to the right from the station. The train then climbs nearly 100 feet before a sharp left hand drop that takes the train around nearly a full 180 degrees. The coaster enters a full loop and then into a 180 degree horseshoe maneuver that takes it around into the second loop. The coaster takes a great amount of speed into a 180 degree turn close to the ground around a grove of trees. It then flies into a left hand corkscrew right by the first loop. Immediately after passing under the horseshoe the coaster enters a 180 degree left hand turn under the lift and flies right into a 540 degree downward helix. This brings it back towards the station and it hits the brake run followed by a final 180 degree left turn into the station. |
