In 1994 Kings Dominion installed the Hurler, a Wayne’s World themed wooden coaster. This coaster was placed at the back of the Candy Apple Grove. Over the years the coaster got a bad reputation for being too rough to enjoy. In 2015 this infamous coaster was closed and the area became off limits. The structure was partially deconstructed in preparation for an Iron Horse conversion from Rocky Mountain Construction. The coaster was reborn as Twisted Timber for the 2018 season. Twisted Timbers is themed to a mysteriously destroyed orchard, taking advantage of the setting of Candy Apple Grove. The lore has the train carrying riders on a tour of the once forbidden and off limits orchard. The trains have a nostalgic 50’s era pickup truck look and the station is themed to a warehouse that was damaged by an unknown, possibly supernatural, and powerful force.
Thrill seekers who are ready to take a bite out of this coaster enter the station and board the train. Once the train is checked and dispatched it dips out of the station and makes a right hand u-turn towards the 111 foot tall lift. At the top the track dips to gain momentum, and slingshots around a banked turnaround that keeps banking into the main drop. The main drop contains a 109 foot tall barrel roll downdrop that begins the descent upside down. The train roars down towards the ground and then past the station at 54 MPH. A small bunny hop gets you out of your seat before moving into the first overbanked turn. The trains then bound over a series of camelback airtime hills before being met with a second inversion a cutback that turns the train around as riders fly though the turn upside down. The element is followed up by a small airtime hill, and then a trick track going towards and through the lift hill structure, the train bounds over another airtime hill as it goes though the structure itself. The track then becomes twisted as the name implies and the train darts back and forth before entering the final inversion a zero-G roll. The track continues to twist, rise and fall keeping rides on their toes until it cuts through the lift hill once more to enter the brakerun. The 3,361 foot long circuit through the off limits orchard is complete. Next time you are at Kings Dominion you are going to want to enter this once forbidden orchard and see for yourself. |
