Alton Towers wanted to push new boundaries with their 2018 addition. The park has had a strong history for theming rides, and creating scenery and effects to really enhance the riders’ experience. So what could be more exciting and terrifying than fire? Alton Towers knows, a wooden coaster on fire. That is right they have tapped Great COasters International and paired them with Skyline Design to create a traditional wooden coaster with some of the most immersive theming to date. The centerpiece is definitely a giant burning effigy of the Wicker Man that erupts fire to interact with the train.
The riders, or “chosen ones” load into a train and are dispatched from the station into a right hand turn dipping down and into a smoke filled tunnel. You breeze through the tunnel and up to the main lift hill. At the top of the lift there is another ominous tunnel, then the train drops down the main 72.2 foot tall lift though the smoke at 44 MPH. The drop curves towards the left and bounds over a small bunny hop before emerging into the light again. The track propels riders skyward into a camelback airtime hill, but at the top there is another tunnel that plunges the train into darkness for the descent, as the train bursts out the riders immediately are swerving into a wide banked turn to the right. The train charges around the structure to the left and into another airtime hill. The descent twists and turns the train and suddenly the “chosen ones” are heading straight towards the burning Wicker Man effigy. The train soars through the structure and the track continues to twist and turn and wind around the effigy. The trains goes around a turnaround at the far end of the layout and then the train bounds over more airtime hills on its way back towards the Wicker Man effigy. The train banks hard to the right and though the bottom of the structure. The track continues to twist, rise and fall on the path around back towards the station. The train hits the brakes, but then slowly rolls into another dark tunnel. The “chosen ones” are now trapped, they can hear the crackling of fire and then can see the glow and smoke in front of them in the distance. What happens next? Only the “chosen ones” know... |
