Up and down the East Coast of the United States you can find a multitude of amusement parks located on piers and boardwalks. Very few can compare to the multi-pier theme park known as Morey’s Piers in Wildwood, New Jersey. Morey’s Piers is a locally owned and operated amusement park that spans three piers and a boardwalk. The park consists of over 100 rides and attractions and is constantly voted as one of the top boardwalk style parks in the country. The park is currently run by 2nd generation brothers Will and Jack. The park also has two beachfront waterparks.
Morey’s Piers began when the brothers purchased the first of the piers in 1969 called Surfside Pier. The brothers installed a fiberglass slide to the pier and began charging a quarter for guests to slide down in burlap sacks. The brothers realized they were on to something and went on to purchase Mariner’s Landing and Adventure Pier. They began to add thrill rides and classic theme park rides over the beginning years and the beachside piers became a growing tourist spot in the Northeast. When the Moreys expanded to the second pier in 1976, they had to take a pier amusement park that had been damaged in a fire and revamp it to coincide with their other pier. They did this and by 1986, the area became another hot spot for the brothers. They went on to purchase the Sea Serpent roller coaster which became an instant smash for the park. In 1985, waterslides were added to Mariner’s Landing and eventually blossomed into the Raging Waters waterpark that is still in operation today. Surfside pier also added a waterpark in 1988 and is now the Oceanside Oasis Waterpark. The brothers eventually purchase the Fun Pier and rename it Adventure Pier. Over the next few years, the park has added rides like a Skyscraper ride, a Spring Shot ride, a Screamin' Swing, a Skycoaster, a maze, a Sky Ride, a Carousel and a Grand Prix Raceway. One of the most famous rides on the piers is the wooden coaster known as the Great White. Coaster enthusiasts flock to ride this ride from all over the Northeast. There are plans for a brand new coaster that will span the piers and is exciting many people. The next time you are vacationing at the beach in New Jersey, make sure you stop by Morey’s Piers. Make it a multi day trip where you can jump on the slides and catch all 100 rides and attractions. You don’t want to pass this opportunity up. |
