One of the first things you should see in the Bay Area is Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, California. The park originally opened as Marine World in 1968. In the mid-1970’s Marine World merged with neighboring Africa USA to become Marine World Africa USA. In 1997, Premier Parks bought the park and added new non-animal attractions. In 1999 the park was re-branded to Six Flags Marine World. On January 17, 2007 the park announced Six Flags Discovery Kingdom as the new name of the park. On June 5, 2007 Six Flags Inc. bought the park from the city of Vallejo. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom sits on 135 acres of land.

The park boasts 8 roller coasters. The two most unique coasters are V2: Vertical Velocity and Medusa. V2: Vertical Velocity opened in 2001. In 2002, the ride was temporarily closed while the track was modified from 186 feet to the city ordinance limit of 150 feet. To lower the height, the front tower was tilted to a 45-degree angle and the reverse tower lowered to 150 feet. V2 is an Intamin Inverted steel launch coaster. Medusa is a B&M floorless coaster added to the park in 2000. Both coasters hold the record as the tallest roller coaster in The Bay Area. The park also offers many animal shows like Odin’s Temple of the Tiger and Leo’s Lion Lair.

In recent years the park has seen more rides, roller coasters and shows added to the park. Sky Screamer was added in the park for the 2011 season. Superman Ultimate Flight a groundbreaking Premier Launch coaster was added to the park for the 2012 season. In 2013 the park debuted a new show called Drench which amazed people in the bay area.

For 2014 Six Flags Discovery Kingdom will add in Tsunami Soaker. In addition with Six Flags Discovery Kingdom’s 2014 announcement the park also announced that Six Flags Discovery Kingdom will operate all year around. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom competes with California’s Great America in Santa Clara, California. No matter how old or how young Six Flags Discovery Kingdom has something for everyone.
