So many of us grew up taking family drives through Six Flags Great Adventure's Wild Safari. We all surely have stories of piling into the family car and watching buffalo graze, giraffes mosey past, and ostriches try to gobble up cameras and other things that were safely protected behind the car windows. And of course plenty of us came out the other side with monkey footprints covering the car (if you were lucky. If you weren't, you might have ended up short of a radio antenna!). The largest drive through safari outside of Africa opened in 1974, with thousands of families taking the DIY tour until 2012, when the park moved away from the model of individual personal vehicles driving through on their own and opened the Safari Off Road Adventure, where guests get onto park-run vehicles to go through the safari in 2013. Even though it will be opening sometime this year, there has been very little official information released on the new roller coaster being built at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter inside of Universal’s Islands of Adventure. While I have previously published plenty of rumors and homemade track layouts, today I have what I believe to be an actual piece of concept art for the new attraction. Provided to me by an anonymous source, the image appears to be a rendering of what the final ride and surrounding area will look like once completed. The concept matches what we’ve seen in aerial photos from @bioreconstruct. There have been a lot of rumored names floating around on the internet, especially in recent days. The one I believe to be the accurate name for the new coaster is “Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure.” However, there is now talk of that name being shortened to simply “Hagrid’s Magical Creatures.” (I would have preferred Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure personally.) I’m reminded of last year when the new “Universal’s Cinematic Celebration” show lost its “Epic Cinema Under the Stars” subtitle at the last minute. Six Flags Great America officials gave the media a first look at the construction of their newest roller coaster, the racing-themed Maxx Force. The coaster is all about speed and acceleration, according to the park's president, Hank Salemi. "It's faster than any other coaster in the park," Salemi said Friday. "It's unique. There aren't a lot of coasters like this in the world." FULL STORY When Carnival Cruise Line announced late last year that Mardi Gras would feature a top-deck roller coaster, they definitely got people talking. And although the ship’s arrival is still so far away that Carnival will introduce two other ships — the brand-new Panorama and the refurbished, renamed Sunrise — before Panorama‘s 2020 roll-out, we couldn’t wait for more details.
So we recently sat down and chatted with Carnival’s Director of Innovation, Glenn Aprile, to find out more about the Bolt coaster... and here’s what we found out. FULL STORY MASON, OH
The 2019 season will mark 40 years since The Beast was unleashed at Kings Island in 1979. So, as part of the ride’s 40th anniversary celebration this year, Kings Island will turn back the clock with a throwback to the original “flame-themed” color scheme on each of the coaster’s three trains. The train colors were red (front cars), orange (middle cars) and yellow (back cars) when The Beast debuted. It has since given more than 54 million rides, the third most in the park’s history, behind the Racer, with 105 million rides, and the K.I. & Miami Valley Railroad, with 56 million. When The Beast first opened April 14, 1979, it was the longest and fastest roller coaster in the world. It still holds the title as the longest wooden roller coaster in the world at 7,359 feet. The Kings Island Blog will serve as the hub for all Beast 40th anniversary news and content. Fans of the ride will be encouraged to visit the blog and share stories of their favorite Beast memories. Other blog features will include a timeline detailing significant moments in the ride’s history, fun facts, behind-the-scenes meet-up opportunities and more. AUTHOR DON HELBIG SANDUSKY, OH
Cedar Fair manages 11 amusement parks across North America, including in major metropolitan areas. But the single most important location ensuring its long-term success resides off Ohio’s north coast, according to the publicly traded company’s leader. “Sandusky is our corporate headquarters, and our commitment has never been stronger,” company CEO Richard Zimmerman said during a Wednesday forum at the Sandusky State Theatre in downtown Sandusky. About 200 people attended the public roundtable event. Along with Zimmerman, two other prominent local CEOs — Jeremy Normington-Slay of Firelands Regional Medical Center and Dennis Shaffer of Civista Bank — participated in the session, co-sponsored by the city government and the Register. The newspaper’s publisher, Ron Waite, served as moderator. The 90-minute forum was recorded and now available for demand viewing at sanduskyregister.com and the Register’s YouTube page. Zimmerman spoke positively about Sandusky — the home of Cedar Point, Cedar Fair’s parent company — because of the many public-private partnerships forged in recent years, resulting in several successful projects, such as Sports Force Parks at Cedar Point Sports Center. Last summer we saw a dormant coaster quietly celebrate its 20th birthday. After spending a clear majority of the 2018 season SBNO we finally know the fate of King's Dominion's Volcano: The Blast Coaster. Last night the park publish a blog looking back at last year's improvements, of which there were many, and looking forward to spring 2019. In this post they somberly let their fans know that Volcano is being removed and cannot reopen. No specific info was given other than this explanation, “Part of getting ready for a new operating season includes an expert evaluation of our rides and operations. As a part of that evaluation, every aspect of our rides and attractions are analyzed, from guest satisfaction, throughput and rider capacity to reliability, uptime and maintenance. After thorough evaluation, the decision has been made to remove Volcano: The Blast Coaster. This wasn’t an easy decision for us, because we know that people love this one-of-a-kind coaster; however, over time it became nearly impossible to keep the ride up to our high standards of reliability and guest satisfaction, and for these reasons we had to make the tough call. We apologize to anyone who is inconvenienced by the removal, but hope they will understand that it was done to enhance the overall guest experience here at Kings Dominion.” Coaster-net is deeply saddened by this news as it was a really fun ride that was unique, and tied to our beginnings. The construction and opening of Volcano: The Blast Coaster by site founder Devin Olsen was our first content when the site launch in August of 1998. The volcano itself has been reused several times for different attractions, and it is unknown at this time if that structure will suffer the same fate as the coaster or if it will be reused on a future attraction.
