A signature ride at Six Flags Fiesta Texas is about to get a Texas sized makeover for 2013. Iron Rattler will transform the outgoing Rattler from a wood coaster to a steel coaster. The ride will be one of the tallest steel coasters with a wooden support structure, known to most as a hybrid coaster, whereas they use one material for the track and another for the structure. Rocky Mountain Construction will be incorporating much of Rattler's existing wood structure as well as new sections with a totally different layout than the wood coaster used to be.
The ride will be 171 ft tall, diving into the ravine at 70 mph. The drop will reach 81 degrees. Other elements included are a barrel roll just after the first drop and 4 over banked turns, all firsts for hybrid coasters. Six Flags Fiesta Texas President Martin Bozer commented in the press release as well. Quote: Six Flags has innovation as part of our DNA and the Iron Rattler will take extreme innovation to a new level with a taller drop, faster speed and steeper banks. This cutting-edge coaster truly marries the best of both classic and modern coaster designs to deliver heart-pounding thrills. Also, according to Tim Baldwin of Rollercoaster! Magazine; Quote: The Rattler’s transformation is expected to be nothing short of spectacular. This innovation is so new in the amusement industry; it has only been done once before. The results were tremendous, and Six Flags Fiesta Texas' project should be equally amazing. The park hopes to open Iron Rattler in spring of 2013. One of Six Flags Fiesta Texas' original rides will finally come to an abrupt end this year. The giant wooden coaster Rattler has been announced to be closed on August 5th. The park didn't say why the ride was being closed nor what would be going in its place if anything.
Rattler has been notorious for its uncomfortable ride and need for renovations. The ride opened in 1992 as the tallest wooden coaster in the world, soaring 179 ft with a 166 ft first drop. The ride sprawled out to over 5,000 ft in length with a course that utilized the canyon-side location which it calls home. However, due to the roughness of the ride even in its first year, the ride underwent many modifications in the first 4 years after it initially opened. Most of the work went into shortening the drop, finishing with a final first drop height of 124 ft. The 2nd hill's drop has been shown on various freelance videos that it sways a lot, some speculate more than a coaster structure should sway. The helix also underwent major modifications and new trains were acquired at some point as well. It is rumored Rocky Mountain Coaster, who did renovations to Texas Giant in 2010, will renovate Rattler to similar extents, either with the Iron Horse treatment with the steel I-beams or the topper track, with steel coverings on top of layers of wood. Down south around the city of San Antonio, Texas, Six Flags has announced that it's Fiesta Texas property shall receive another coaster, making it the park's eighth coaster. The new coaster is dubbed Goliath and shall be the forth track in a Six Flags park with that name. Though new to the area, the ride has quite a history behind it.
The ride is one of Bolliger and Mabillard's famous coasters, Batman: The Ride clones, sporting heights of 100 ft, five inversions, and speeds of 50 miles per hour. This particular coaster first hauled guests for Thrill Valley in Japan. Six Flags then purchased the coaster for the newest park in the chain in New Orleans. It became, however, quite clear after hurricane Katrina that the park was on the verge of an uncertain future. Now, the ride is to be erected at the San Antonio park, Fiesta Texas. Notable changes to the ride other than location include a repaint to blue track with yellow supports and trains sporting orange, blue and yellow. Thus far, the track and trains are in storage at the Texas facility and preparations will be made soon to construct it. |
